AI agents for beginners: what they actually do

Comment "AGENTS" on Instagram and I'll DM you this guide.

Everyone's talking about AI agents. Almost nobody explains them plainly. Here's the version your friend can actually use.

Chatbot vs agent

  • A chatbot answers. You ask, it responds, then it stops.
  • An agent acts. You give it a job, it uses tools (your email, your calendar, a spreadsheet), makes decisions, and finishes the job.

Think of a chatbot as an employee who can only talk. An agent is an employee who can actually do the work.

What an agent can do today

  • Read your inbox, draft replies, and label what needs you
  • Watch a spreadsheet and flag anything that changed
  • Turn a meeting recording into notes, tasks, and a follow-up email
  • Research a topic and hand you a one-page brief
  • Follow up with leads who haven't replied

Where to start

  1. Start with ChatGPT or Claude and use scheduled prompts. One daily prompt that summarizes your inbox is already an agent doing a job.
  2. When you're ready, try a no-code tool like n8n or Zapier to connect the AI to your actual apps.
  3. Only after that does it make sense to build a custom agent for your specific business.

The honest truth

An agent is only as good as the job you give it. The people getting results aren't using more AI. They're giving it one clear, boring, repetitive job and letting it run.
